A Brief Journey through Hawaii’s Islands

The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago off the coast of the western United States. It is one of the top twenty most densely populated regions in the US, but it is also one of the most highly trafficked. Millions of tourists will visit the islands each year, so it’s important to know which islands you want to see before you touch down.

Kauai

The northern most island in Hawaii is graced with a natural beauty you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The beaches of the Coconut Coast are great for tanning, or you can tour the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

Oahu

Oahu houses the state capital, and it’s where most Hawaiians call home. Oahu is a modern mix of culture and tradition, blending city life with the native Hawaiian lore.

Molokai

Molokai’s population is almost half native, so the region has a strong connection to the past. Visit the Kalaupapa state park to learn about the art and culture of Hawaii.

Lanai

Lanai is the far-removed getaway most people think of when they envision Hawaii. The island is almost entirely devoid of traffic lights, and it’s well known as a private destination. There are plenty of resorts to relax, or you can take a four-wheeler tour of the island.

Maui

The beaches of Maui are some of the most beautiful in the world. Maui also has some of the most active whale watching too. Enjoy an early sunrise, or travel the island’s winding highways for a scenic tour through the region.

Bora Bora and Three Other Island Getaways

The islands of Bora Bora are some of the most beautiful places to be on Earth, but they are not the only island getaways that are worth visiting. Pristine beaches, amazing wildlife and a thriving party scene await you on any of these other island vacation spots.

Santorini

The island of Santorini in Greece is home to whitewashed villas and some of the most gorgeous views on Earth. The blue-domed buildings set atop a cliff-side composed of volcanic rock, overlooking a view of the sea, are straight out of ancient Greece. If the islands of Greece are where the old gods came from, Santorini is where they put their feet up after a long day.

Bora Bora

Bora Bora features almost everything one could ask for in an island getaway:

  • Bungalows in the water, built atop stilts
  • Private islands full of shopping, massage parlors and decadent restaurants
  • Plenty of nature, including scuba diving and hiking

Located in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is a must see for everyone at least once in their lives.

Gili Trawangan

You can find plush-white sands and sea turtles in the island paradise of Gili T. You need to take a short boat ride off the coast of Bali to get there, but the island features a party scene that is one-of-a-kind. Expect to spend your mornings recovering from the all-night beach parties.

Borneo

Borneo is the place for anyone who has ever seen a National Geographic special on television and thought, “Why not me?” As one of Asia’s best destinations on a budget, you’ll find snorkeling and gorgeous beaches in this unexpected island getaway.
